Fishing Skill

Fishing Skill is increased by catching Fish, Trash, Seaweed, Green Algae, or White Algae with a Fishing Rod/Pole, by harvesting Crab Pots, or by collecting items from Fish Ponds.

Each level grants +1 Fishing Rod , increases the minimum fish size (in/cm) and bobber bar height, and decreases the max amount of time before fish bite.

Upgrades

You can upgrade your tools at the in exchange for gold and metal bars, with upgrades taking two days to complete. During the upgrade, you can’t buy anything or ask Clint to break open geodes. Tools must be upgraded in ascending order of materials; for example, a copper tool can’t be upgraded directly to iridium.

Tips:

• The practical meaning of an upgrade «taking two days to complete» is that you will wake up on two successive days without your tool. You may use the tool during the day, then take it to the Blacksmith (before it closes) to upgrade. The next day you will be without your tool. The following day, you must travel to the Blacksmith to pick up the tool, and can use it for the remainder of the day.
• When a tool has completed upgrading, a message will appear in the lower left corner of the screen when waking up for the day.

Stardew Valley

A peaceful region located on the southern coast of the . Dr. Harvey identifies its location over his shortwave radio as .

Gem Sea

The ocean that makes up the entire southern coast of Pelican Town. There is a prairie-island located within it that had inspired the Journey of the Prairie King video game. Rumors suggest that Gunther comes from across the Gem Sea.

Fern Islands

An archipelago in the Gem Sea belonging to the Ferngill Republic. Willy is from there. When married to Haley, if at 13 hearts she will ask the player if they ever thought about retirement. Haley wishes to spend your days together there. Gus usually uses Fern Island Ringfruit for his premier candy canes, according to his dialogue during the Feast of the Winter Star.

Ginger Island can be accessed after repairing the boat in the backroom of Willy’s Fish Shop and buying tickets. Ginger Island is the only island available to visit in the archipelago, though other islands can be seen from the boat on the way there.

Castle Village

It is unknown where exactly Castle Village is. It is known for its «artisanal velvet» as mentioned in the description of Earmuffs.

Zuzu City

This is the City where a number of people from Pelican Town are from. Haley apparently has visited it, as The Queen of Sauce mentions that she reportedly fell in love with her Pink Cake after visiting Zuzu City. Alex notes that they have a gridball team called the Zuzu City Tunnelers, Sam mentions he used to live there, and Shane will take the Player to a match for his . Leah’s ex, Kel, says in Leah’s 10-heart event that they came all the way from Zuzu city to see the sculptures (Note: This only happens if you suggested the art show at the 2-heart event for Leah). After collecting all , a letter is sent signed by «The Z.C. Rarecrow Society».

The «The Zuzu City Express» also references Zuzu City.

Grampleton

One of the dialogue choices during Penny’s 8-heart event may lead the player to refer to Stardew Valley’s natural resources by saying «You’ll find no better lumber south of Grampleton.»

During Clint’s 6-heart event he invites Emily to the Grampleton Carnival.

The movie «It Howls in the Rain» references Grampleton.

Prairie Island

Referenced in the «Natural Wonders: Exploring Our Vibrant World», it is an island far to the west of the Gem Sea, home to a diverse array of natural biomes and an abundant population of raccoons. The name «Prairie Island» possibly in reference to Journey of the Prairie King.

Storage Options

Inside Farm Buildings

Kegs can be stored in farm buildings.

A Shed, optimally filled with kegs, holds 67 of them, while occupying only 21 tiles of land. An upgraded Big Shed, optimally filled, holds 137 kegs on the same land space. A Barn, however, is cheaper, and holds 90 kegs on 28 tiles of land. The Deluxe Barn increases building costs considerably, but has so far been shown to be able to fit 136 kegs on the same land space as the initial Barn. Coops are cheaper still, but smaller, permitting fewer kegs per tile of external farmland used. Cabins are the cheapest initially, occupy the smallest land area of 15 tiles, but can only hold 42 kegs without upgrades, assuming the cabin is unclaimed and the parsnips and bed must remain. The first level of upgraded cabin can hold 113 kegs at a lower cost than any other option. While the second upgrade significantly raises costs, 351 kegs can be stored in a fully renovated cabin, allowing the largest number of kegs per external farmland used.

Kegs can be stored almost anywhere outside the farm. Out of the way places are best as NPCs walking through a keg will destroy it. Other good options not pictured are the Desert and the Railroad.

Fish

This tab keeps track of the type and amount of Fish caught, either using a or Crab Pot. Entries are added upon catching fish or collecting them from crab pots. Fish do not need to be shipped to count towards the collection.

Fish foraged from The Beach, dropped by enemies, or purchased from Krobus or The Traveling Cart do not count towards the Fish Collection.

There are also Fairies, Elves, Merpeople, and Tundra Dwellers.

Humans

Humans make up the majority of ‘s population. Most humans live normal lives, however Wizards and Witches still exist and study ancient arcane energies.

Dwarves

Dwarves call themselves ‘Smoluanu’, or ‘Sky People’. They are known for living underground and once having advanced technology in ancient times. Archaeologist M. Jasper believes they are an alien race, as indicated in the Lost Book entitled . One dwarf can be found living in the The Mines while a second is running a in the Volcano Dungeon.

Shadow People

Shadow people are beings that cannot stand the light. They fought in the Elemental Wars when the Dwarves invaded their ancestral home deep underground. Krobus is a shadow person who can be found living in The Sewers. Most of the shadow people encountered in the game are monsters found in The Mines, known as Shadow Brutes and Shadow Shamans. Humans also call them Void Spirits.

Junimos

Keepers of the forest. They are spirits that live with the trees. Most of the Junimos can be found living in the Community Center. They have inspired the Junimo Kart video game.

Goblins

Not much is known about this race other from the Lost Book titled . A goblin (the Henchman) can be encountered guarding the Witch’s Hut, who will only move after being given Void Mayonnaise, which is considered a delicacy by the Goblin race.

Merpeople

The Wizard makes a reference to their existence during the Luau, but not much is known about them. At the Night Market there is a Mermaid Boat, where upon entering, a mermaid will appear and begin singing to the player, accompanied by a cutscene. Her performance lasts 1 hour and 40 mins, but the player may leave at any time. On rainy days a Mermaid will appear on the large rock by the shore of the Pirate Cove on Ginger Island. Very rarely, a green sea monster might appear under the left-most pier at The Beach and then swim south. This may be a merperson. It is purely cosmetic and cannot be caught by fishing.

Tundra Dwellers

Referenced by Linus at the Festival of Ice, when he says «Igloo-building’s an art I picked up from the tundra dwellers who live beyond the frozen sea.»

Marriage

Once married, Leah will move into the farmhouse. Like other marriage candidates, she will add her own room to the right of the bedroom. She’ll also set up a small area behind the farmhouse where she’ll sometimes go to work on a sculpture.

On rainy mornings, Leah may offer you a gift she found while «mushroom-hunting»: Chanterelle, Common Mushroom, Red Mushroom, or Morel. On mornings when Leah stays indoors all day, she may offer you Coffee or a gift grown in «a little pot out back»: Wild Horseradish, Daffodil, Leek, Dandelion, Cactus Fruit, Fiddlehead Fern, Spice Berry, or Sweet Pea. She may also offer you a Salad on days when she stays indoors all day. On New Years’ Eve (Winter 28), she’ll give you a bottle of Wine.

Proficiency

Proficiency refers to the amount of energy required to use a specific tool.

At skill level 0, each successful use of a Pickaxe, Axe, or Hoe costs 2 energy. Unsuccessful uses (e.g., attempting to chop a Large Log with the starter axe) cost 1 energy. Each cast of the costs 8 energy, even if the cast fails (e.g., the fishing line does not land in water). The starter Watering Can uses 2 energy.

Each increase in skill decreases energy requirements by 0.1 points for specific tools (listed ). Skill increases past level 10 (only possible temporarily via Buffs) continue to decrease the energy requirements. So, for example, using a Pickaxe at Mining level 13 costs only 0.7 points per swing. (The game keeps track of fractional amounts of energy, but in the user interface they are rounded to the nearest integer).

Powering up an upgraded watering can increases its energy cost by 2 points per power-up; each increase in skill decreases the energy requirement by 0.1 points (regardless of power level). At Farming Level 0, the starter can uses 2 energy to water one tile; the iridium can at maximum power uses 10 energy to water eighteen tiles. At Farming Level 10, the starter can uses 1 energy; the iridium at maximum power uses 9 energy (10 minus .1 per skill level). Using an upgraded can to water fewer tiles than it is able costs the same energy as the first watering can upgrade that is able to water that many tiles (single tile always the same as starter can, 5 tiles always the same as steel can). Attempting to use an empty watering can doesn’t cost energy. Filling a watering can never uses energy.

Upgrading an Axe, Pickaxe, or Hoe does not alter the amount of energy required to use it. The increased efficiency of the Axe, Pickaxe, or Hoe, however, will result in less overall energy used for the same task than a lower-level tool.

Note that all Hoes use the same energy (2 points at Farming Level 0, and 1 point at Farming Level 10), whether powered-up or used to till one tile of soil.

All fishing poles use the same energy: 8 points at Fishing Level 0, and 7 points at Fishing Level 10.

Neither loading a Crab Pot with Bait nor harvesting it uses any energy, at any skill level.

Fishing

Skill-Based Title

Based on the total Skill level a certain Title is given under the player’s name in the Skills tab of the Player Menu. Their level and title are also visible when hovering over their picture on the Inventory Tab of the Player Menu.

The level is calculated as follows:

If the resulting number ends in 0.5, the decimal value is truncated, and only the integer portion is considered.

Luck level 10 as well as level 10 in all Skills would be needed to get the Highest title, Farm King. Unfortunately, luck level (a value separate from daily Luck) is not implemented in the game as of PC v1.5. Luck level appears (in the game code) to have been intended as a 6th skill that could be leveled up, like the other skills. This means that the highest level possible is 25, making «Farmer» the best obtainable title.
