Development and design

Snips is an excitable and goofy pony, often entering a fit of eager jumping at the slightest inclination. He is an unusually short and round pony, much like Truffle, and is possibly the smallest unicorn in all of Ponyville, other than babies such as Pumpkin Cake. He is characterized by his small eyes, buck teeth, high and scratchy voice, short light brown mane and tail, and large brown eyebrows. These features grant him a unique appearance in comparison to the other residents of Ponyville. His irises are usually not visible outside of My Little Pony: Pony Life, similarly to those of Snails, but they are sometimes visible in the IDW comics, varying between brown on ‘s page 12 and dark blue on ‘s Hot Topic RE cover.

His cutie mark, a pair of scissors, is explained by him in the IDW comics’ story Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair — Part Deux «If You Only Have a Hammer, You See Every Problem as a Nail» as meaning that he is «excellent at cutting all things».

Both Snips, as well as partner-in-crime Snails, are named after the traditional nursery rhyme What Are Little Boys Made Of. A version of the verse goes:

What are little boys made of?

Snips and snails and puppy dogs’ tails.

That’s what little boys are made of.

According to Lauren Faust, originally Snips and Snails’ sizes were reversed; Snips was the bigger one and Snails was the smaller one. According to Jim Miller on July 13, 2015, Claude and Snips aren’t father and son.

explores Tirek’s «secret origins»: at a young age, Tirek, a prince of his homeland, was instructed in the ways of magic by a centaur hermit named and became interested in pony magic through him. Tirek’s ambitions greatly concerned his parents and .

When Tirek attempts to absorb the magic of a unicorn that Sendak captured, it backfires, resulting in an explosion that catches the whole kingdom’s attention. King Vorak sends Sendak to the mines for his crimes, punishes Tirek, and returns the unicorn to Equestria. While confined to his castle quarters, Tirek plots to overthrow his father and rule over Equestria.

LORD TIREK is a cruel Centaur who tried to steal Equestrian magic after escaping from his prison in the dark realm of Tartarus. His boiling anger and frightening appearance are enough to make anypony shiver with fear. Thankfully, Twilight Sparkle and her friends defeated Lord Tirek, sending him back to his underworld prison.

My Little Pony (mobile game)

Tirek appears as a boss character in Gameloft’s mobile game in a loose adaptation of his appearance in the series. During a story event based on the season six finale, one of the Changelings faced by Starlight Glimmer’s party takes Tirek’s fourth form. In his old form, Tirek also serves as an enemy boss during the School Raze-based event, in which he only reveals his connection with Cozy Glow after being fought. He also serves as boss of the “Tale of Tirek” event, appearing in his third form, and in the «Tale of Tirek Part Two» event, appearing in his young form. Young Tirek was added as a playable character in update 6.7. His bio states, «In retrospect, him growing his beard out was a REALLY good call.»

Shorts

Tirek appears an antagonist in the short Save Equestria from Lord Tirek!!, part of the My Little Pony Established 1983 series.

Tirek’s G1 counterpart appears in Vol. 3, in which Twilight takes part in an altered version of the events of Rescue at Midnight Castle. Here, Tirek’s plan to bring eternal night upon Ponyland is aided by his acquisition of the Element of Magic.

Season one

Lotus Blossom first appears in the episode Bridle Gossip, and later they appear together in Green Isn’t Your Color. In the former episode, Lotus only appears briefly in the final scene, asking Zecora for the ingredients of her herbal bath. She speaks with a Swedish accent.

The spa offers many services in Green Isn’t Your Color, such as massages, mud baths, seaweed bath wraps, steam rooms, and even horn filing for unicorn ponies. Rarity comes in for her «usual» and returns for a second time as soon as she’s finished. Aloe does not seem to notice that Fluttershy is not a unicorn pony when she attempts to give her a horn filing regardless before realizing her mistake.

Season two

Lotus Blossom and Aloe also appear in A Friend in Deed where they give Cranky Doodle Donkey a service as a gift from Pinkie Pie.

Lotus Blossom later appears in Ponyville Confidential, where she attempts to give Rainbow Dash a hooficure, which she refuses hastily.

Season five

Aloe and Lotus Blossom appear in Castle Sweet Castle when Twilight Sparkle and Spike visit the day spa. Aloe has her first in-show speaking role in the episode, the credits of which refer to her simply as «Spa Pony». Both also appear in Slice of Life. Lotus has her second in-show speaking role in the episode. The credits name Lotus Blossom as in previous materials. Both appear in the final group shot during Friends Are Always There For You in The Cutie Re-Mark — Part 2.

Season six

Lotus Blossom appears in On Your Marks watching Tender Taps’ tap-dancing performance at the Ponyville dance theater. In No Second Prances, Lotus Blossom appears giving Starlight Glimmer a spa treatment, and Aloe appears in the audience during Trixie’s magic show. Lotus Blossom and Aloe can be seen from the back in the final group shot of A Hearth’s Warming Tail. Aloe appears with her second in-show speaking role in Applejack’s «Day» Off, the credits of which name her as in previous materials. Lotus Blossom appears in The Fault in Our Cutie Marks watching Gabby play baseball.

Season seven

Lotus Blossom appears in Parental Glideance as a member of the crowd at the Wonderbolts showcase. Lotus Blossom and Aloe appear in the crowd of the contest in Honest Apple. Lotus Blossom appears in Fame and Misfortune holding an «I Heart Twilight Sparkle» sign. Both Lotus and Aloe appear in line to buy flowers at the Ponyville marketplace in It Isn’t the Mane Thing About You.

Season nine

In The Beginning of the End — Part 2, both Aloe and Lotus Blossom get brainwashed by King Sombra into invading Canterlot. Eventually, they get freed from Sombra’s mind control after the Mane Six defeat him. In She’s All Yak, they both appear in the reused image of The Cutie Re-Mark — Part 2 during Fit Right In, and appear in the Ponyville Spa wearing hazmat suits while washing Yona.

Aloe and Lotus appear in Between Dark and Dawn, giving Princess Luna and Princess Celestia makeovers. In Dragon Dropped, Aloe and Lotus both appear in a flashback tending to Rarity and Spike. In The Big Mac Question, Aloe appears kicking Sweetie Belle out of the spa for disturbing a spa patron. In The Ending of the End — Part 2, Aloe and Lotus take shelter with the other Earth ponies as Ponyville closes itself off from the other pony races. In The Last Problem, Aloe and Lotus briefly appear in Rainbow Dash’s group shot during The Magic of Friendship Grows.

Clip shows

Aloe and Lotus Blossom both appear with speaking lines in the clip show episode Deep Tissue Memories. In the closing credits, Aloe’s name is listed as «Aloe Vera».

Development and design

Octavia Melody shares her design and cutie mark with Fiddly Twang, her design with «», and her eye design with Rarity, the spa ponies, and several background ponies, except for the iris. The origin of the name «Octavia» is attributed to both Alex McG in a comment on May 7, 2011, and a Blogger commenter going by the nickname «Octavia.» This fan-given name was officially adopted in Enterplay’s and in Gameloft’s mobile game each in 2012 and used in one of Little, Brown’s chapter books, being expanded to «Octavia Melody» in Hasbro’s toy line and in Funko’s each in 2013. She is first referred to by name in the season nine episode A Horse Shoe-In. The name «Octavia» likely refers to the musical concept of octaves, whereas «Melody» refers to the term of the same name.

While the show does not specifically identify Octavia Melody’s instrument, state that it is a cello. William Anderson, the show’s composer, has relayed to Equestria Daily that the music playing at the garden party in Sweet and Elite features a harp, two violins, and a cello, which pegs Octavia as a cellist. The show’s director, Jayson Thiessen, figures the instrument is a cello as it’s «more sophisticated and appropriate for the gala.»Meghan McCarthy has indirectly referred to Octavia’s role in Inspiration Manifestation as «cello playing.»

Hasbro’s My Little Pony Friendship Express Train Puzzle Adventure shows Lotus Blossom with Twilight Sparkle in a screenshot from Ponyville Confidential. The game was released earlier than the episode was.
