Beefy Skeletons Fight

Now there isn’t really much to talk about this fight on Normal Mode, aside from the expected damage output that the Skeletons do, but on Insane Mode this fight is challenging and is one of the most hardest parts of the game. Beefy Skeletons can kill you in 3-4 hits, most of the devastating attacks come from a deadly combo of punching and throwing, doing a good 600+ damage per combo.

There are many ways to go about this fight:

1. Play aggressively towards killing the first, quick lead Beefy Skeleton. This will lead to the other Beefy Skeletons turning into assist and support characters. You can do this by using the Beefy Juggle.2. Splash Attack spam efficiently.3. Use Health Potions sparingly. It may seen like you’re nearing death after getting hit twice by a Beefy Skeleton, but you should really only heal when you see your character get pulled from out of the air by a Beefy Skeleton.4. Arrow spam. This is a slower method involving the exploitation of the Beefys getting stuck on a wall. You really have to only look out for 2 things: the lead Beefy Skeleton coming towards you and the assist and support regular Skeletons using their , , , and .5. Play aggressively towards killing all 4 Beefy Skeletons. You die fast, you kill them faster in return.

Paintings

The Painter, instead of attacking the player directly, paints various dangerous cartoonish creatures on his painting frame. a variety of conjured paintings that will explode on contact with the player, dealing heavy damage. He spawns about 11 different drawings. There is also a possibility that the creator of the drawings will have a humorous saying behind them. There is a theory that the paintings may have been original ideas for enemies for the game. The paintings are concept sketches made by Tom Fulp.

All of the paintings will have either 300, 400, or 600 HP, and they have varying levels of defense and elemental resistances.

Here is the order of what painting the Painter summons and their mechanics:

Unicorn: Easiest of the paintings. Stops to do a prancing motion. Takes the appearance of a badly drawn pink unicorn with purple hair and a single horn.

  • Clown: Resilient to arrows, weak to Fire. This painting is similiar to This Clown. (WARNING: NSFW)
  • Carrot Clock: Weak to Fire. Its a giant carrot with a clock-like figure on them.
  • Red Square Bull: WIP.
  • Green Ghoul: A green humanoid figure with yellow teeth and eyes, a angry expression, and a blue(or dark) mouth. One of the most common paintings.
  • Cat: A giant orange humanoid cat that somewhat ressembles Garfield; without the stripes in fur/skin.
  • Safety scissors: WIP.
  • Blue Monster: WIP.

Octopus: A purple small octopus that slowly walks at you and deals you common damage.

Elephant: Widest hitbox of all the paintings. Takes the appearance of a Badly drawn Elephant.

Nose Snail: Very resilient to arrows, weak to Fire. Also very slow when coming; its moviments have constant delays. A giant humanlike nose inside a purple Gastropod Shell.

Epilogue

After defeating him, his fortress will crumble and he’ll plummet to his death. He’ll leave the magic crystal and the Orange Princess behind. He drops the Demon Sword, but you only have about five seconds to pick it up. There is an off chance that the Demon Sword will fall out of reach, being either in the background or not on the platform entirely, depending on where you kill him. Afterward, you will catch the Orange Princess and see the end credits. After the end credits the knights are found in the king’s castle having a party when the king walks into the room with the last princess. The knights then are forced to have a duel to the death for the princess. The winner will kiss the princess before the princess is revealed to be a clown.

A large buzzsaw blade moves across the ground. Each upgrade adds an extra buzzsaw, up to 7 total. Unlike other Splash spells, the first version has full range, and each upgrade adds an extra blade but not an extra distance. Each blade can do 4 hits on enemies that aren’t knocked over, unlike the typical Splash spell that does 1 hit per upgrade level.

Each buzzsaw spawns at a random size and distance from you, and some may start slightly behind you and not go as far. At max upgrade, this means the spell can protect you from both sides. The buzzsaws also take a while to finish after the casting animation is complete, so you can move away just after casting it while the buzzsaws continue to deal damage from where you were before.

Buzzsaws completely ignore all terrain including pits, slopes, walls, and the line in the volleyball game. This is another feature unique to them.

This is the most powerful spell for defeating enemies that aren’t knocked over, due to the number of hits. This makes characters using this spell able to defeat ground-based bosses in mere seconds. Even taking enemies that are knocked over into consideration, the spell is still overpowered because of the incredible crowd control capabilities.

When at max potential, this attack does approximately 2.9x more damage to any enemy that receives chain damage than the next most powerful splash attack, but at the same time it yields four times as much XP per cast of magic, making it the most effective form of magic for XP farming Catfish/Painter. Also, at maxed magic, when the splash is spammed, it can eviscerate Catfish before it even spits out a furball, but only on Normal Mode.

The only Splash Attacks that come remotely close in the same fast killing power ranks are Snakey and Brute’s Thorny Vines, Ninja’s Smokescreen, and, to a lesser extent, Fire Demon’s Flaming Pillars.

«Thunderbolt»

Max Hits: Depends on the amount of Magic and how long / is held for; maximum Infinite

Damage/Hit: 3 + (0.1 * level) + (magic * 0.4)

Use / to perform. A lightning bolt held out in front of you for as long as the button is held. Takes normal Magic cost to start it, but then continues to drain Magic slowly for as long as it is held. Each upgrade adds to the range of the titular «Thunderbolt» Splash Attack, but not to the number of hits, which is affected by how long it can be held until Magic runs out.

Maximum potential ensures 24 hits before it runs out. This locks normal enemies in place while it is active and can affect as many enemies get in range. Although it does less damage per hit than is normal for Splash Attacks, it is unique in being able to hit regular enemies multiple times. This spell is very effective against bosses such as the Conehead Groom and Necromancer, as they can be held in place with it and shocked.

It is also effective in Multiplayer, as it is capable of aligning many enemies at once for safe juggles and combos. For complete utilization of this Splash Attack, the player should be aware that the enemies are briefly knocked down after the Splash Attack ends, allowing some time for the player to flee to a better position. Note that this Splash Attack does not acquire XP from bosses.

Use / to perform. Leaps up with an electrified boost, knocking over enemies caught in it. There are no special effects, but knockback on enemies is not based on weight group but elemental resistance instead.

Strategy

Overview

Thief’s respective «Arrow Rain» Splash Attack and «Knife» Magic Projectile and Air Projectile make him a member of the fan nicknamed «Arrow Rainers». Bland and common characters that show off nothing special at all. These are considered to be the gold standard for Castle Crashers, as they are painfully below average and are not unique, unlike the characters below them. These are the aforementioned Thief, Stove Face, Peasant, Civilian, and Open-Faced Gray Knight.

Below average character because of their splash being delayed enemies can often just slip through without getting hit. It’s bad in almost every situation you use it in. The only notable use is stunning beefies in order to start juggles.

Grinding Spots

These are the appropriate grinding spots that utilize juggling efficiently:

  • Thieves’ Forest (Insane Mode): Assuming that you’ve never put points into Strength and are using a Strength reduction weapon, such as the Glowstick or Cardboard Tube or Skeletor Mace and also using Giraffey or Hawkster you can achieve 30+ level ups just from the Troll Mother

    A good strategy for squeezing in all of the level ups is to make sure you avoid the Troll Mother at all costs while juggling her Trolls.

  • Marsh (Insane Mode): Same as Thieves’ Forest except the Beefy Skeleton wave might give you a bit of trouble.
  • Snow World (Insane Mode): Due to the amount of Iceskimos

    This is a useful grinding spot even if you’ve maximized all of your stats at this point of the game.

    in this level, you can easily get 1/2 level up(s) per visit.

Trivia

  • This item can be found in unlimited supplies during the Lava World level at the metal gate and the Volcano miniboss. Fire Demons will repeatedly spawn and drop sandwiches until the player opens the gate or kills the Volcano.
  • Despite their powerful effect, Sandwiches are often considered a disadvantage; as they make the player an easy target.
  • The player’s shield is unaffected by the sandwich.
  • This item is often called «Toast». This may be because on a low definition TV, the icon appears to be a single slice of toast instead of a whole sandwich.
  • This item is often called a «Knuckle Sandwich», most likely originating from the threat: «I’m gonna give you a knuckle sandwich!».
  • This item is often referred to as the «Beef Sandwich» because it makes the player beefy.
  • It appeared in Fleeing The Complex as an item in solo mode where Henry Stickmin becomes beefy and knocks out 2 of the guards before reverting back to normal and getting kicked by the 3rd guard.
  • This item may be a reference to the Heavy in the game Team Fortress 2.

    There is also the voice line for the Heavy, «Sandvich make me strong!» The beefy effect given by the sandwich is a possible reference to this voice line.

    The Heavy can use the Sandvich to heal himself.

Use

To use a sandwich, select it in the usable items menu, then press the / button. While in Beefy Mode, players can deal increased melee damage and can move specific heavy objects. The effect lasts only for 10 seconds.

Players must be beefy to:

  • Move a large boulder in the Tall Grass Field that leads to Burly Bear and the Fish weapon.
  • Open the gate in Lava World.
  • Fight the Volcano in Lava World.
  • Open the front door to the Industrial Castle.

While under the Sandwich’s effect, the player can:

  • Run through the spiky traps after the poison gas projectiles easily without getting knocked back in Industrial Castle.
  • Windmill the Necromancer and Conehead Groom infinitely, but only on the PS3 version, where the player does not get off the ground after getting in a few hits.

Trivia

  • Brute only appears 3 times in the game, twice as a Beefy in Industrial Castle and Wizard Castle Interior, and also has a chance to be resurrected as a Skeleton in Lava World.
  • Brute is the only Beefy enemy in the game to have an Animal Orb, which is Cardinal.
  • On the Xbox 360, players can dress up their Avatar as the Brute by purchasing both the helmet and tunic in the Avatar Store.
  • Since Brute’s starting weapon is the Dual Prong Sword, he, at Level 1, can switch to a different weapon and switch back to the Dual Prong Sword.
  • Brute’s character portrait in the Steam, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch versions of Castle Crashers shows a black blotch not seen in the XBLA and PS3 versions of Castle Crashers. This is the only character portrait to have been changed, unintentionally or not.
  • In older versions of the game, the Brute was lightweight instead of heavyweight. If this stayed then the Necromancer fight would be quite a lot easier on Insane Mode.

Information

Background

Skeletons first appear as resurrected enemies summoned by the Necromancer. These enemies include Brutes, Saracens, Coneheads, and Stove Faces, while also resurrecting Civilians, Peasants, and possibly, even fallen Gray Knights in Lava World. A lot of Skeletons are seen throughout Marsh attacking local Peasants and Civilians. Also during Marsh, the Necromancer and the Evil Wizard use their powers together, with Necromancer resurrecting the Skeletons and Evil Wizard turning 4 of them into Beefies.

Involvement

Skeletons are summoned by the Necromancer. This can be seen in both Lava World and Marsh where the Necromancer appears reviving Skeletons from the ground.

Description

Skeletons have a deep crack going down the right part of their frontal bones; they are mostly seen covered in dirt, likely because they emerged from the ground.

Skeletons that are encountered in Lava World have a chance of being summoned with Brute, Saracen, Civilian, Peasant, Conehead, or Stove Face armor save for the shield.

Trivia

  • There are a total of 21 bosses to fight in all versions of Castle Crashers.
  • Evil Wizard has the most phases out of every boss in the entire game with 5 (6 if counting the Crystal Shards).
  • Volcano is the only boss in the entire game that requires an item in order to kill it.
  • The following bosses, when killed, will give you these respective Princesses. if playing in co-op, the players will have to duel until there is one person standing to receive a kiss from the princesses.
    • Killing the Barbarian Boss will give you the Red Princess.
    • Killing the Cyclops will give you the Green Princess.
    • Killing the Frost King will give you the Blue Princess.
    • Killing the Evil Wizard will give you the Orange Princess.
  • Pipistrello deals the highest damage out of all the bosses in the entire game with 999 damage dealt from his tongue attack on Insane Mode; enough to kill anyone below 1,000+ HP.

Weight and Combo Categories

There are different weight groups for enemies, and some are more or less common than others.

  • Light: The most common weight group; Barbarians and Thieves are examples of light enemies, but the full list is rather long.
  • Light-Medium: The second most uncommon group; only the enemies in King’s Arena, Thieves’ Arena, Volcano Arena, and Icy Arena employ this category of weight. They are lightweight but have increased weight making you have to be lower to the ground to lightweight juggle them.
  • Necromancer: The weight group exclusive to the enemy Necromancer. Can be infinitely juggled, but it is recommended to use mediumweight juggles when juggling.
  • Medium: The second most common group; Fire Demons, Snakeys, Cult Minions, NPC Gray Knights, Civilians, Peasants, King, and players are in this category. Oddly enough, this is one of three weight groups that can’t be juggled infinitely.
  • Medium-Heavy: The most rare weight group of all; only the Snakeys in Peasant Arena are in this category. They are mediumweight with increased weight making it so they can’t be juggled as much as regular mediumweights.
  • Heavy: The third most common group; only certain Coneheads, Conehead Groom, Royal Guards, and Brutes are in this category. Similarly to Light enemies, Heavy enemies can be infinitely juggled, but precise timing and positioning is required.
  • Heavy-Medium: Only Stove Faces reside in this category. They are the same as heavyweights, except they also have the properties of a mediumweight, where they gain extra weight over time when in the air. It is worth noting that Stovefaces will be lighter when hit with elemental attacks, unlike when they get hit with physical attacks.

Just to clarify some things, there are noobs, then rookies, then novices, then experienced players, then skilled players, then professional players. These labels aren’t to point fingers, but to help someone understand their affinity for juggling, because it can be frustrating to go from no experience at all to doing 30-hit medium weight enemy juggles from muscle memory. By finding where you fit in to these groups of players, it can help you take baby steps into higher difficulties of juggling.

A noob is someone who’s playing the game for the first time. After that, they’re a rookie. A rookie becomes a novice when they beat the game for the first time. A novice becomes an experienced player when they’ve beaten the game several times (more than four times). An experienced player becomes a skilled player when they beat Insane Mode. A skilled player becomes a professional player when they’ve beaten Insane Mode several times (more than four times).

  • Simple: Combos that are so easy anyone can just play the game for the first time and be able to do it. Most of the time these combos sacrifice efficiency and effectiveness for ease of use, or could even be entirely ineffective. These juggles are mostly intended for rookies to get a feel for juggling, and a noob may be able to if they’re accustomed to fighting hack and slash games.
  • Beginner: A little more complex than simple, obviously. These are more geared towards novices than rookies, and can also be considered 100% efficient by professional players. Often most infinite juggle combos will be considered this difficulty.

Background

A Fire Demon is first encountered in Cyclops’ Fortress fighting alongside an Elite Conehead. Their second appearance is in Lava World, where they are the primary enemies. At certain points in the level, Killing Fire Demons will make them drop a sandwich, which are needed to fight the Volcano and can be helpful against the Dragon and Sock Puppet. The sandwiches are also needed to access Industrial Castle.

Involvement

Fire Demons make up the main population of Lava World. It is also assumed that they serve the Cyclops, as one of them can be seen assisting an Elite Conehead in fending off the player in Cyclops’ Fortress. It is also assumed that Fire Demons cause no harm, but defend their area from any attackers.

Description

Fire Demons are draconic in appearance. They have yellow eyes with oversized wings, and their big teeth are always shown. Fire Demon’s element is completely comprised of Fire, similar to Orange Knight. Fire Demons are one of the main antagonists of Back Off Barbarian, along with Iceskimos and Barbarians.
