Class: Main Battle TankDeveloped: 1976-1979Service: 1979+Vehicles Built: cca 30000 incl. license production (cca 8700 in the Soviet Union)Operators: Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact countries and more than 60 other operators around the worldOf the three main Soviet MBTs simultaneously in service (T-64, T-72 and T-80), Uralvagonzavod’s T-72 is by far the most recognizable one. In fact, much like its T-55 predecessor, it can be said that the T-72 became an icon of sorts, its sleek silhouette firmly connected to the Soviet Union. Whether it’s an image of a horde of these machines creeping through an East German forest or massive groups of them burning in the middle of an Iraqi desert, the T-72 is, without a doubt, one of the most widely recognized tanks in the world. On the 16th of December 1976, the Uralvagonzavod design bureau in Nizhny Tagil under V.N.Venediktov, one of the creators of the original T-72, was ordered to develop an upgrade to the T-72 Ural with the goal of improving its combat characteristics. The project was designated Object 176. It took over two years to complete and on the 22nd of June 1979 the Soviet military officially accepted the vehicle into service under the designation of T-72A.The tank was significantly modified compared to its predecessor. Firepower was increased with the installation of the new 125mm smoothbore gun model that was more accurate than its predecessor. From 1981 onwards, a modernized 2A46M version was installed instead. Accuracy was further improved by the installation of TPD-K1 optics. A new ballistics computer set 1A40 was added to the 1982 model and the 1984 version received a new 2E42-2 gun stabilizer, making the vehicle significantly more accurate on the move. Speaking of mobility, it was increased with the installation of a new 780hp V-46-6 engine as well as some smaller changes to the suspension. In 1984, the vehicle received a new 840hp V-84 engine.Vehicle protection was enhanced with composite armor on the turret. The composite armor elements gave the front turret its notable «cheeks», leading to the western nickname «Dolly Parton» of this model. The frontal turret protection increased from 400mm to roughly 500mm RHAe versus HEAT projectiles. In later T-72A models (from 1980 onwards), the upper frontal hull plate was increased by welding an additional 30mm plate onto it. The final version of the T-72A (T-72AV from 1985) was equipped with Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor. The T-72A and its variants were produced between 1979 and 1985 before being replaced by the T-72B series, although its license production abroad (in the form of the T-72M and T-72M1 models continued well beyond that. Overall, it was one of the most successful versions of the T-72 tank and many vehicles of this type are still currently in service and used in combat, most notably in Syria.

Role[]

In Armored Warfare, the Tank Destroyer class covers most of the abovementioned vehicles, although it heavily overlaps with the Light Tank and Armored Fighting Vehicle classes. Tank Destroyers come in two major flavors:

Missile Tank Destroyers, which primarily fire ATGMs at their targets from long range with good accuracy. The lighter Missile TDs are very fast and stealthy, but come with poor armor and no alternative weapon, leaving them defenseless at close range. The heavy missile tank destroyers are a different beast entirely, consisting of heavily armored gun platforms armed with both ATGMs and Autocannons, but are very large compared to most other TD models, and have similar mobility to Main Battle Tanks.

Gun Tank Destroyers, which are among some of the most mobile vehicles in Armored Warfare, allowing them to maneuver to a position, attack, and relocate rapidly to avoid any chance of return fire. With the most accurate guns in the game at the cost of being very fragile against all but the weakest of enemy guns, Gun TDs are the ultimate glass cannon archetype.

Their battlefield role is long-range sniping and fire support. The static accuracy of the class is unparalleled, but suffers when moving, so TDs must rely on being stationary. Using concealment is also key; staying hidden behind some cover, ideally a bush or two, increases camouflage factor, making the vehicle harder to spot. As with most classes, map knowledge is vital; waiting along the expected routes of enemy approach in ambush is a good idea, and all maps contain a number of such spots. Of all the classes in Armored Warfare, the Tank Destroyers require perhaps the most patience and planning.

Player Recommendations[]

Highly mobile and heavily armored, the T-80 is a tank purpose built for flanking attacks. With heavy turret armor and one of the best accelerations on any MBT in the game, it excels in fast maneuvers around enemy positions that are impossible for most other heavily armored vehicles. However, it does not sacrifice armor for mobility, and having relatively high armor for its tier. These two characteristics make it one of the most devastating vehicles at its tier.

Cons

  • Extremely high hull traverse can make precise turning hard
  • Mediocre gun depression
  • Mediocre turret traverse
  • Lack of ERA makes this tank more vulnerable to guided missiles compared to other tier 5 Soviet T-series MBTs.

Upgrade Suggestions

Upgrading your firepower through better ammunition and modifications will improve the effectiveness of flanking attacks, so these should be the primary focus.

  • Commander: Juan Carlos, to improve the aim speed and crew stats.
  • Driver: Spin to Win, Off-Road Driving
  • Gunner: Sharpshooter, Do the Twist

Gameplay[]

When the matchmaking system successfully finds five players, the mission map begins to load while a loading screen displays the setup of the five-man team for the upcoming battle. A 30-second countdown will start when a certain number of players have successfully loaded the map. When all players are present while the countdown is still active, the timer will switch to 3 seconds before starting the battle.

Mission objectives

Mission briefing and objectives.

A PvE mission typically has primary and secondary objectives. Primary objectives are usually marked with large circles on the minimap, whereas secondary objectives are marked with small circles. Players must complete the primary objectives within the given time limits, or else the mission would end in a failure. Secondary objectives are optional, but completing them rewards all players with bonus .

There are generally three types of objectives:

  • Capturing a location
  • Defending a location from hostile capture
  • Destroying a valuable target
  • Defending a valuable target (target’s health bar will be displayed on the objective window)

Sometimes a mission objective becomes complete when all enemy vehicles in context with the said objective are destroyed, even if the objective itself has not been interacted at all.

Opponents

During missions, players are confronted by bots — AI-controlled enemies in vehicles that behave similarly to the player counterparts. Their toughness and numbers are defined by the difficulty level of the mission. Enemy vehicles may have suffixes to their names, which indicate the vehicles’ quality and differences from the «standard» vehicles and let players know how difficult that respective opponent is.

  • Fragile — Weak than standard vehicle in firepower, penetration, health, and armor
  • No prefix — Standard vehicle
  • Superior — Stronger than standard vehicle in firepower, penetration, health, and armor. Also comes with upgrades such as ERA and APS (if available)
  • Lieutenant/Officer — Mini-boss variants with significant quality in firepower, penetration, health, armor, and view range.

In Special Operations missions, it is also possible to face enemies that come in other forms, such as infantry, helicopters, or pillboxes.

Mechanics

Vehicles both controlled by players and bots have reduced view range compared to PvP mode to reflect on PvE mode’s smaller map sizes. The highest possible view range value is also reduced.

Players in PvE battles have access to the fourth consumable slot, which is reserved for the Field Rebuilt Kit or the Experimental Field Rebuilt Kit. Both consumables can restore the vehicle’s hit points back to full capacity, but they do not replenish ammunition, nor do they heal injured crew or repair modules by themselves; those can be restored with other dedicated consumables. Field Rebuilt Kit and Experimental Field Repair Kit do not replenish ammunition, but a PvE mode exclusive ability to refill ammunition in an instant is available for every player to activate without cost once per PvE battle.

Respawn is also available for all vehicles when a player’s vehicle is destroyed in a PvE mission. Upon destruction, a respawn screen will appear with the Credit cost of a respawn in the middle. Click on the Credit icon within the allotted time limit (indicated by the timer in the middle of the screen) to accept the respawn offer. Two respawns per PvE battle are available, the second one being rather more expensive than the first.

Rewards

When a mission ends, players are presented with a debriefing screen with the summary of their performance. Experience and are rewarded for successfully reaching objectives, however players will receive a reduced amount of reward even if the mission was not successful.

In addition to player performance, the rewards are also dependent on each mission’s objective bonuses and difficulty multiplier.

History[]

Class: Dual-Purpose Missile Launcher (Concept)Developed: 1996Service: N/AVehicles Built: 0Operators: N/AThe Abrams AGDS (Armored Ground Defense System) was a vehicle concept and proposal, drafted in July 1996 by Dr. Asher H. Sharoni (a former colonel in the Israeli Defense Forces) and Lawrence D. Bacon from a Californian company called Western Design Howden. It was supposed to be an air-defense vehicle, protecting the Abrams formations against flying threats, although its weaponry can be deployed against ground targets as well. The United States were, at the time, sorely lacking a vehicle comparable to the Russian Shilka and one of the ideas was to use the Abrams chassis paired with a new turret to produce an armored AA gun that would be able to keep up with the American tank units. This plan was never realized and the vehicle stayed only on paper.

Player Recommendations[]

Play with this tank Hull down according to the new armor calculator the frontal arc of the tank can be penetrated very easily at close range at 30 m the penetration of an armor piercing round is that mid to lower 70%. While at 1,000 meters it goes down from 75 or 76% to about 18%. Distance is key but this tank so it might be good as a short to mid-range sniper. So remember to keep your distance from the enemy and you won’t take damage, the closer you are to the enemy the more the penetration is likely.

Cons

  • speed lost in turns
  • Stock Ammo
  • Frontal armor can be pened at close range(See armor Calculator for more details)

Entering a battle[]

Players can enter a PvP matchmaking queue by selecting a vehicle that they own or an active rental vehicle then select Random Battle under the Player vs Player tab on the HQ screen. Alternatively, clicking the «Action!» button on top of any screens will have the same effect if Random Battle was the last game mode played.

Up to three players can join a PvP matchmaking queue in a platoon. When entering a queue with a platoon. The Tier difference across all players’ vehicles must not exceed 1. For example, it is permissible to have Tiers 4 and 5 in platoon, but Tiers 3 or 6 in addition to Tiers 4 and 5 are not allowed.

If players queue for more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds with vehicles between Tiers 1 and 7 during off-peak hours (i.e. from 23:00 CEST to 10:30 CEST), they will join a Random Battle between two teams of ten consisting vehicles of similar tiers. The rest of the team members that are not human players are instead filled by AI-controlled vehicles.

Class: Main Battle Tank (Prototype)Developed: 1990-1991Service: N/AVehicles Built: 1Operators: N/AThe Type 90-II Chinese Main Battle Tank prototype is a rather interesting piece of Chinese machinery, built, unlike many of the previous Chinese vehicles, from scratch instead of by upgrading some older, obsolete design. For one, the Type 90 MBT was not an evolution of the Type 85, although it used the same weapon system. It was basically a new attempt for a third generation tank based on the lessons learned from a T-72 that the Chinese had acquired earlier in the 1980s from Romania. While the whole vehicle had the typical Chinese shapes of the late 1980s and 1990s (when China moved away from the classic cast turrets and replaced them with welded ones), the suspension is different from that of the Type 85 series and can be traced back to the abovementioned T-72.Secondly, the Type 90 was built for export, specifically to Pakistan. In other words, it was not designed as a third generation MBT for Chinese use, that role eventually fell to Type 96 and Type 99 MBTs. The 1991 Type 90-II prototype, developed by NORINCO, weighed 48 tons and had a crew of three. It was basically a mash-up of older Chinese technologies from Type 80 and Type 85 MBTs and Soviet upgrades. It was armed with a copy of the Soviet 125mm 2A46 smoothbore called Type 83. Some sources claim that the vehicle could also fire gun-launched guided missiles, specifically a copy of the Soviet 9K119 Refleks system. The base armor of the vehicle was from steel but layers of composite were added to the turret and hull front. The exact protection levels are not known but are assumed to be roughly the same as a base T-72 model. The engine choice was somewhat unique. Instead of powering their new creation with a standard Chinese engine of the era, the Chinese offered a wide scale of imported engines and transmissions for the vehicle with the baseline being the Ukrainian 6TD diesel from Kharkov producing some 1200hp.The Pakistanis apparently didn’t like first prototype all too much but, instead, became more involved in the vehicle development, which eventually led to an improved version called Type 90-IIM, more commonly known under the name MBT-2000. Pakistan purchased and mass-produced MBT-2000 from 2001 under the name of Al-Khalid but this MBT is so different from the original Type 90-II that it cannot be counted as a variant thereof. While several hundred MBT-2000s were produced, the Type 90-II itself remained a prototype vehicle only.

Class: Reconnaissance VehicleDeveloped: 1988Service: 1990+Vehicles Built: cca 2400Operators: France, Greece, Oman, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Gabon, Indonesia, Kuwait, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Qatar, Senegal, Togo and UAEThe VBL is a light, four-wheeled armored fighting vehicle, designed for multiple roles while offering its crew basic small arms protection. It is a compact machine, capable of great speeds and a wide variety of duties, including reconnaissance, liaison tasks or even armored vehicle killing. It was developed by Panhard in the late 1980s and its designation stands for Véhicule Blindé Léger (Light Armored Vehicle). In a way it was designed for the «old» type of war, symmetric warfare where units in such vehicles wouldn’t be the most common target of enemy attention. The original purpose of the program was to replace the American Jeep vehicles still in French service in the late 1970s and to provide the French army with a light and affordable platform for multiple weapons systems. The VBL was accepted in French service in 1990 and has found its way to around a dozen (mostly African) countries. It’s a very popular export item thanks to its ruggedness and versatility. The biggest operators include France (approximately 1400 in service), Greece, and Oman. All in all, around 2400 were built. Over the years, the VBLs in French service were mostly involved in peacekeeping operations for the United Nations, such as those in former Yugoslavia, Lebanon and Somalia, but some saw service in Mali, the Ivory Coast and Afghanistan. The Nigerians used VBLs in counter-insurgency operations as light fighting vehicles (the recon variant armed with a Browning M2 .50 caliber heavy machinegun). This particular model features either a 20mm autocannon turret or a TOW ATGM launcher. The TOW variant is used by Greece.

Player Recommendations[]

As a self-propelled gun, the M108 is best used as a support vehicle for helping the team progress by removing heavily armored targets such as MBTs from the battle. Teamwork is needed for those both working with and playing an SPG. Teammates should be asked to call out targets if they are in trouble, and front-line vehicles should be supported in the battle.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Splash radius around shell, useful for resetting base capture
  • More accurate than higher caliber artillery
  • Decent mobility

Cons

  • Long reload and aiming time
  • Weak armor
  • Dependent on other vehicles for spotting

Upgrade Suggestions

As the upgrades are very limited and are only marginally effective for the purpose of the vehicle, the Improved Tracks and Upgraded Exhaust Smoke are recommended, but not vital.

Apple Watch.

History[]

Class: Main Battle TankDeveloped: 1988-1991Service: 1992+Vehicles Built: cca 1300-1800 (sources vary, includes license production)Operators: Soviet Union, Russia, India, Iraq, Vietnam, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Turkmenistan and Uganda (allegedly)The T-90 MBT started out as a heavily modified variant of the T-72B. The primary goal of the entire program was to improve the T-72B to T-80U/UD level. It was developed in 1988 in Nizhny Tagil by the Uralvagonzavod design bureau, led by V.V.Potkin, under the designation of Object 188. In early 1989 the vehicle successfully passed state trials, proving to be very reliable, and on March 27, 1991 the Soviet Ministry of Defense recommended that it should become the next main battle tank of the Soviet army. This decision proved fruitless, however, as the results of Operation Desert Storm once again raised the question as to whether the T-72 should actually be modernized. Another delay was caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union.Influenced by the Desert Storm experience, Uralvagonzavod decided to improve the protection of the vehicle even further by adding the new TShU-1 Shtora soft-kill APS to the design. Additional trials were held and this improved Object 188 was accepted into service on October 5, 1992 under the designation T-90. It was the last design to feature the round cast turret, so typical for Soviet MBTs. The original T-90 was mass-produced between 1992 and 1998. The entire production run history is somewhat unclear as at one point production apparently ceased due to Russian military budget cuts. Nevertheless, by 2012, the Russian army had roughly 500 T-90 and T-90A in its inventory and the rest were sold off with multiple countries or license-produced elsewhere, most notably in India.

Player Recommendations[]

The last of the standard variants of the M1 Abrams platform available in Armored Warfare, the M1A2C Abrams continues the pattern of high mobility and excellent protection the series is known for. While the Abrams’ firepower may not be the best of its tier, its speed and armor allow the it to perform as an excellent flanker, strong hull down defender, and decent brawler.

Cons

  • Poor stock DPM
  • Abysmal stock acceleration

Upgrade Suggestions

Upgrading to the AGT-1500 Tiger Gas Turbine Engine, Soft Kill APS, and TUSK v.3 ERA armor kit early will enhance the already good mobility and armor protection.  Although important, firepower upgrades should be focused on later, due to their high cost and marginal improvement to gun capability.
